6. Why Both Approaches Are Needed
No single conservation method is
sufficient for all species and ecosystems. In-situ conservation is essential
because species are components of ecological networks and evolve in response to
natural environmental conditions. Ex-situ conservation provides an additional
safety net when wild populations are too small or threatened to survive without
intervention. The strongest conservation programmes therefore integrate both
approaches. For example, habitat protection may be combined with captive
breeding, seed banking, genetic management, restoration and later
reintroduction.
Integrated conservation planning should
begin by identifying the causes of decline. If habitat loss is the major
threat, protection and restoration of habitat are indispensable. If only a few
individuals remain, ex-situ propagation may be urgently required while the
habitat is restored. If genetic diversity has declined, managed breeding or
movement of individuals among populations may be needed. Conservation is
therefore most effective when ecological, genetic, demographic and social
information are considered together.
