Practical: Study of Nostoc

Image
Practical: Study of Nostoc Nostoc is a filamentous, photosynthetic cyanobacterium. It commonly occurs in freshwater, moist soil, wet rocks and other damp habitats. Colonies are usually gelatinous because numerous filaments remain embedded in a mucilaginous matrix. Materials Required Fresh or preserved Nostoc material, clean glass slide, cover slip, dropper, dissecting needle, water, blotting paper and compound microscope. Procedure Take a small quantity of Nostoc colony with the help of a dissecting needle and place it on a clean glass slide. Add one or two drops of water and gently tease the material so that the filaments become separated. Place a cover slip carefully over the material without trapping air bubbles. Remove excess water with blotting paper. First observe the preparation under low power and then under high power of the compound microscope. Observations The plant body of Nostoc is thalloid and usually forms a soft, jelly-like colony. A colony contains numerous ...

Gene delivery to a potential transgenic plant

Various methods of gene delivery to a potential transgenic plant.                          The uptake of foreign DNA or transgenes by plant cell is called transformation. A variety of techniques have been used to introduce transgene into plant cell. This can be grouped into following two major categories:-        a) Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer.        b) Direct gene transfer.   a) Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer :- Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a remarkable species of soil-dwelling bacteria that has the ability to infect plant cells with a piece of its DNA. When the bacterial DNA is integrated into a plant chromosome, it effectively hijacks the plant’s cellular machinery and uses it to ensure the proliferation of the bacterial population. The gene transfer through Agrobact...

Ecological importance of bryophyte.

Ecological importance of bryophyte.                    Bryophytes are the amphibian member of plant kingdom, which are also known as moss. Unlike most of the higher plants bryophytes are found in groups of individual   and they never form any mechanical tissue. Bryophyte often play in the economy of nature, as ecological indicator, medicinal raw materials and many other aspects.    Bryophytes are important constituent of ecosystem in temperate and tropical region   of earth. They are ecologically important because of following reasons 1. Bryophytes and plant succession : Among the bryophytes the mosses are considered to potent forms of successional process. They colonize over   the nutrient poor   sides, where no other plant can survive. After death and decay they form humus and increase   the soil fertility. Some important species under this category are- Cephalozia media ...
